Light, Infinity, and the Space Between Certainty

Recently, I found myself tumbling down one of those rabbit holes that begins with a simple question and ends with your entire understanding of reality wobbling like a café table with one short leg.

The question was deceptively simple:

If light travels forever through empty space, does that mean light is infinite?

What followed was not a scientific discussion alone. It became a journey into philosophy, faith, time, existence, and the uncomfortable realization that reality may be far more mysterious than most of us were taught.

The Light That Never Stops

Light moves through the vacuum of space at roughly 186,000 miles per second.

Unlike sound, which requires air, water, or some other medium to carry it, light needs nothing. It simply travels.

If a beam of light leaves a star and encounters no obstacle, it can continue its journey for billions of years.

Some of the light reaching our eyes tonight began traveling before humans existed.

Some left its source before the pyramids were built.

Some may have begun its journey before Earth itself was fully formed.

The night sky is not merely a collection of distant objects.

It is a museum of ancient moments.

Every star is a message from the past.

Looking Backward to Look Outward

One of the strangest discoveries in modern astronomy is that distance and time are intertwined.

When we look at the Moon, we see it about 1.3 seconds in the past.

When we look at the Sun, we see it roughly eight minutes in the past.

When astronomers observe distant galaxies, they are often seeing them millions or even billions of years ago.

In a very real sense, every telescope is a time machine.

The farther we look into space, the farther we look into history.

The universe does not reveal itself as it is.

It reveals itself as it was.

There Is No Universal "Now"

This realization leads to an even stranger conclusion.

There is no single universal present moment.

Einstein's theory of relativity demonstrated that time is not a fixed cosmic clock ticking identically for everyone.

Time stretches.

Time contracts.

Gravity influences it.

Speed influences it.

Two observers can disagree about the timing of events and both be correct.

The "now" you are experiencing on Earth is not necessarily the same "now" experienced elsewhere in the cosmos.

This can feel deeply unsettling because most of us intuitively imagine the universe operating on one giant synchronized clock.

It doesn't.

Reality appears far more flexible than our everyday experience suggests.

The Expanding Universe

As if this were not enough, scientists discovered something even more astonishing.

The universe itself is expanding.


Galaxies are not simply moving through space.

Space itself is stretching.


Imagine raisins embedded in rising bread dough.

As the dough expands, every raisin moves farther from every other raisin.

The raisins are not traveling through the dough.

The dough itself is expanding.

The universe behaves similarly.

The space between galaxies continues to grow.

And the expansion appears to be accelerating.


This raises questions that science continues to investigate:


What drives this expansion?

What is dark energy?

Will expansion continue forever?

Will the universe eventually grow cold and dark?

Or is there something deeper still waiting to be discovered?


The answers remain incomplete.


Where Philosophy Begins

At this point, philosophy quietly enters the room.

Science excels at explaining how things happen.

Philosophy often asks why.


Why does anything exist at all?

Why are there laws of physics instead of chaos?

Why is mathematics so effective at describing reality?

Why does consciousness emerge from matter?

Why are we capable of wondering about the universe in the first place?


These questions sit beyond equations.

They live in the territory of meaning.


For thousands of years, philosophers have wrestled with the possibility that existence itself points beyond itself.


Not necessarily to a particular doctrine or denomination, but to something deeper than material explanation alone.

Something that gives rise to being itself.


Where Faith Enters the Conversation

Faith often begins where certainty ends.


Many people assume faith and science occupy opposite sides of a battlefield.

Yet some of history's greatest scientists viewed their discoveries as invitations to wonder rather than reasons to abandon belief.


The more they learned, the larger the mystery became.


For some, an expanding universe suggests a Creator.

For others, it suggests a natural process requiring no divine explanation.


Both interpretations emerge from the same observations.


The data itself does not force the conclusion.


What often differs is the lens through which we interpret it.

Perhaps that is why humility matters.


The farther we peer into reality, the more we encounter questions rather than answers.


Light as Messenger

One thought refuses to leave me.


If light can travel for billions of years across unimaginable distances, carrying information from ancient corners of the cosmos, then much of what we call "the present" is already the past...


Everything we see arrives late.


The Moon reaches us after more than a second.

The Sun arrives eight minutes after it leaves.

The stars appear not as they are, but as they were.


Even the friend sitting across the room is seen a fraction of a second in the past. Not enough to notice, yet enough to be true.


In a sense, we never encounter reality directly.


We encounter messages.

Signals.

Ancient arrivals.


Perhaps this is why so many spiritual traditions have treated light as more than a physical phenomenon. Light reveals. Light carries news. Light bridges distances we cannot cross ourselves.


The Arabs have a beautiful saying:


Al-Rih Rasoul. The wind is a messenger.


I sometimes wonder if light serves a similar role in the cosmos.

A messenger carrying stories across unimaginable expanses of time and space, reminding us that the universe may be far larger, stranger, and more interconnected than we realize.


Living with Wonder

In a culture obsessed with certainty, perhaps one of the most radical acts is remaining curious.


Not rushing to conclusions.

Not demanding immediate answers.

Not forcing mystery into tidy boxes.


The universe is expanding.

Time is flexible.

Light carries the past.


There is no universal "now."


And somehow, amid all of that cosmic complexity, we find ourselves here, conscious enough to ask questions about it.


Whether you call that chance, providence, creation, emergence, or something else entirely, it is difficult not to pause and feel a sense of awe.


Perhaps awe is not the end of inquiry.

Perhaps it is where inquiry begins.


And maybe, just maybe, wonder itself is one of the oldest languages spoken by both science and faith.
